Last week (July 20–24, 2026), our director Ludwig Liagre, PhD, had the pleasure of contributing to the 9th AFR100 Annual Partnership Meeting (APM9) in Nosy-Be, Madagascar. The event brought together key stakeholders working to advance forest landscape restoration (FLR) across the continent under the AFR100 initiative.
As part of a study conducted by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with support from GFA Consulting Group GmbH, Ludwig shared strategic insights on how forest landscape restoration can align with national priorities and accelerate the implementation of international commitments—notably through stronger integration into NDCs, NAPs, and NBSAPs.
Mobilizing Finance for Forest Landscape Restoration in Africa
The presentation tackled a vital question for the sector: how can we mobilize more and better finance for forest landscape restoration in Africa while maximizing long-term benefits for climate, biodiversity, and local communities?
Achieving this requires:
- Strengthening the links between national priorities, restoration programmes, and funding mechanisms.
- Developing scalable restoration interventions designed to attract and deploy public, private, and blended finance.
Connecting Climate, Biodiversity, and Land Agendas
The year 2026 marks a crucial turning point, featuring all three Rio Convention COPs focusing on climate, biodiversity, and land degradation. Forest landscape restoration offers a practical bridge to connect these global agendas, delivering simultaneous impacts for environmental resilience and socio-economic development.
